Somatic therapy is an approach that emphasises the mind-body connection to promote healing and well-being. As a Master Somatic Therapist, I am frequently asked how somatic therapy supports the nervous system, offering relief from stress, trauma, and grief.

Understanding the Nervous System

The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). It regulates bodily functions and responses to stress through the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which includes the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branches.

What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy integrates body awareness into psychotherapy. Developed over decades, it addresses the physical manifestations of past experiences, aiming to release stress and trauma stored in the body. I trained in California at the Tamalpa Institute, where movement, expressive arts, and creative writing are used as tools and resources to address the trauma stored in our bodies and guide individuals towards individualisation, confrontation, release, and change.

Over more than a decade, I have witnessed how helpful it has been for my clients to get more in touch with their emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual selves, gaining more proprioception and resources to ground themselves when triggering moments occur.

Mechanisms of Somatic Therapy on the Nervous System

Somatic therapy targets the autonomic nervous system through various techniques:

  • Body Awareness: Focusing on physical sensations to identify stress.
  • Breathwork: Using breathing exercises to calm the nervous system.
  • Movement and Postural Adjustments: Incorporating physical movements to release tension. These techniques leverage neuroplasticity, allowing the nervous system to rewire itself and improve regulation.

Benefits of Somatic Therapy for Nervous System Regulation

Somatic therapy offers numerous benefits:

  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction: By discharging trapped stress, individuals experience relief from anxiety.
  • Enhanced Emotional Regulation: Improved ability to manage emotions and reactions.
  • Increased Resilience: Better coping mechanisms for future stressors.

Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of somatic therapy in reducing symptoms of PTSD and chronic stress.

Practical Applications of Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy can be integrated into daily life through:

  • Breathing Exercises: Practicing deep, mindful breathing.
  • Grounding Techniques: Using sensory experiences to stay present.
  • Movement Practices: Engaging in activities like yoga or dance to release tension.

Challenges & Considerations

While somatic therapy is beneficial, it may not suit everyone. Potential challenges include discomfort with body-focused techniques or resistance to exploring past traumas. Individuals with severe physical trauma should seek a trauma-informed therapist.
