2500 years back this truth was spoken. And today, many science-based wellbeing researchers have done some amazing work to prove this and written some very insightful books.
Dr Joe Dispenza, renowned author, speaker, and researcher in the fields of neuroscience, epigenetics, and quantum physics has described how our beliefs change our perceptions; and as our perceptions change, how our behaviour changes in response. Dr Bruce H. Lipton, renowned cell biologist, lecturer, and author has explained how thoughts, beliefs, and emotions can influence cellular biology and overall health.
Conscious & Subconscious Mind
We know that our brain is made up of the conscious and the subconscious mind. What is interesting to understand is that the conscious brain has only 3-5% processing power and the subconscious has 95-97%. Clearly, we can’t just focus on the conscious mind to create our reality. The belief patterns ingrained in our subconscious mind that we carry from pre-life programming and our childhood cannot be ignored. And this is even more so if we don’t like our current reality.
Unless we become aware of own values, belief system & thought processes, we cannot create long lasting change. Why? Because until we change these subconscious patterns to match the reality we want to create in our behaviour, we will be like a hamster on a wheel who doesn’t really get anywhere as our short-term behaviour change will contradict with our subconscious beliefs even though our conscious brain is working hard to make the change.
By making the subconscious thoughts conscious, we can change and choose our thoughts, that will define our choices, that will lead to new behaviour and experiences and therefore new thoughts. This will feedback into our subconscious mind. And the pattern over a time will become our new personality.
The Art of Visualisation
Research has shown that the mere act of mentally rehearsing who we want to be, begins to install neurological circuits in our brain to look like the experience has already occurred. That is why visualisation is such a powerful technique in manifestation.
Try this: Close your eyes for a few mins, take a few deep breaths, and imagine you are living your perfect future – imagine every detail of it. You, your family, your house, your job whatever you need in that future. Now connect with the feeling that this thought brings (I bet you are smiling just picturing this). That feeling is important.
The brain is no longer living in the past but in the future. If we can cultivate the emotional state ahead of the actual experience, the body in its conscious mind doesn’t know the difference. The body starts to live in the future than in the past. When we can emotionally feel an experience first, the experience then seeks us – our thoughts create our life. What we do inside of us produces something outside.
Self & Environment
Buddhism teaches the concept of the self and environment which explains that our environment reflects what is in our mind, heart and lives. This concept also explains why sometimes people don’t see any change even though they are working towards their goals. If our determination and our beliefs don’t correlate, our subconscious mind will resist the realisation of our determination. Say, a person determines to get a particular job. However subconsciously they strongly believe that there are other people more qualified than them, and they cannot get the job. Then the strength of that determination is clouded by their doubts. So, they must work on those beliefs that are creating the doubts first and, with awareness, transform them to having more confidence in their abilities to get the right job.
When we express our determination in a deeply confident way, the environment responds in the same way.
Working Towards Change
I know you are probably thinking it all sounds good in theory, but it feels like putting a Lego set together without a manual.
This is where working with a holistic transformational coach can really help bring that awareness and the change that you seek – you can work on creating a shift in the subconscious patterns that are holding you back to create your reality.
