4 Steps to Embrace Your Inner Artist
I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.
Helena Bonham Carter
Everyone is already an artist, even if society doesn’t categorise us as such. A grandparent is an artist when they tell a grandchild a story about when they were growing up. That story is a piece of art that then has the ability to be passed down through generations. When a mother or father teaches their friend or child how to cook a favorite recipe, that is art. Art cannot be clearly defined as a Picasso or Rembrandt. Being an artist is an expression of human creative skill and imagination, with art taking a variety of forms. Remember that art is an expression of emotion and/or evokes emotion in others. Passions typically ignite emotions in you, which when expressed, tends to be contagious for others.
Everyone is capable of making art. Everyone is capable of expressing their innate creativity in some way. You don’t need to wield a paintbrush or a camera to be called an artist. You all have the ability to create, and you actually already do it every day. You might be an artist when you cook, when you run, when you inspire others. You are born with a creative spirit, unique to your own passions. Expressing yourself in a focused, meaningful way is being an artist. Being passionate and purposeful about a career or your family is creating art. What you put into the world becomes your art, whether that is fixing up cars, writing a screenplay, or raising a family. Embracing those passions, thus creating art, forms the beautiful ever-changing painting of life.
As you get older, the artist, that passionate, creative spirit to express and emotionally affect others, might alter and change, maybe even become suppressed.
Picasso said “We are all born artists, the problem is to remain an artist as we grow up”.
Don’t let the practicality of life keep you from expressing yourself. Whatever your medium of passionate expression is, keep sharing it with others. We all have a unique way to look at the world, so embrace your art!
Express your inner self, your perception of the world, and who you are. Create. Maybe that’s keeping a journal, drawing, painting, sculpting, or playing an instrument. Maybe that’s solving a new maths equation, making the perfect cup of coffee, or designing a new software program. Whatever you decide to create today for whatever audience that is, feel something. Ignite or reignite an emotional state in others as well as yourself.
4 Steps to Embrace Your Inner Artist:
- Take stock of your passions in life. Do you like to work on cars? Is painting your passion?
- Highlight that passion in your life, creating art for yourself, as well as others. This could be working at an auto-body shop and enthusiastically using your artistic skills to fix up cars that come in, thus putting your passion out into the world, spreading your art. Or your passion could be a more conventional definition of art by you painting a masterpiece for a museum or a mural in your room for you and others to enjoy.
- Continue to share your art with the world on a continual basis. Do check-ins to make sure too much time doesn’t pass with your inner artist suppressed.
- Now that you’re sharing your art with the world, remember to go out and enjoy other people’s art! There is nothing better than us all as artists creating a positive community, filled with emotional expression and connection.
Say it out loud, “I am an artist”.
When you embrace your unique ability to create art and when you use that art to positively affect and impact others, you are able to connect deeper as a community.
So, let’s encourage each other and share our art.
