What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is an ancient but little-known yogic practice that is a form of guided relaxation combined with alert awareness. The literal translation of Nidra is sleep, however Yoga Nidra is a dynamic state, not like the unconscious sleep of night time. In this meditative practice we practice letting go, surrendering and simply being here – now – in our own skin.
On a basic level Yoga Nidra relaxes, rejuvenates and renews the physical body by cultivating awareness and immersing our brain in the healing rhythms of the alpha state. This allows us to simultaneously access the power of the logical left brain as well as the intuitive, insightful right brain, which in turn helps to align our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems to restore the body and mind to homeostasis.
How is Yoga Nidra good for children?
Yoga Nidra for children can be a beautiful yet effective way to help them calm down after a particularly long day, encourage better sleep and even provide a respite from studying if they’re having difficulty concentrating. It is also believed that children with disabilities and behaviour disorders benefit greatly from a Yoga Nidra practice.
Through meditative experiences children learn how to stay calm, focused and grounded, increasing their connection between their mind and body. Regular practice helps them control their butterfly mind and give them tools to empower them in times of stress.
I find in my classes that children seem to access this space much easier than adults and as imitation is a key part of early interactions this is a wonderful way for them to learn positive habits from you, particularly whilst their brains are so malleable.
The Supercala Yoga Nidra recorded below is designed for ages 2 and 8 (if they still have magical imaginations at 8!) and is a beautiful way to bring the family together and enjoy some time to rest….
