Creating a growth mindset

You may have heard the term growth mindset before, but what is a growth mindset?

A growth mindset is seeing any challenges and problems as something that can be achieved and worked around. It’s what I class as having a ‘positive and I can’ mentality that gives you an outside the box view that can’t be held back or caged in.

But how can you start creating this mindset to help you achieve everything with less stress? I have 3 simple tips and steps that I use to get myself out of that ‘I can’t’ mentality which could help transform your mindset.

Step 1: Love failing!

Failure is something that so many people fear and hate to experience. Failing is often viewed as not doing something good enough and viewed as being rejected.

This is wrong! It is easy to view it that way if that is all you’ve ever known, however you can change this and start loving the experience of failing by seeing failure in a different light.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.

Paulo Coelho

Failing is learning! If you succeed you have done something right but not succeeding just means you are still learning and growing ready for that next chance to win.

To eradicate this old mindset, change your words and inner self-talk before anything that you are nervous about. Some great things I like to say are: ‘I am excited to learn, I am excited to grow, and I am excited to experience new possibilities’. The more you say these and other positive words before and after anything you do, the more it shapes your mind to find all the ways to learn without feeling a sense of ‘failure’.

Step 2: Believe in yourself

Believing in yourself is so important. It’s knowing that something will be available to you, even if it’s not available right now, because of your skills and abilities. This is where so many people start saying they can’t do something. They can’t get a degree, they can’t remember anything, they can’t achieve their dreams and so on and so on.

To help you start believing in what is possible, find 3 things every day that shows the amazing skills, knowledge and abilities you have. The more you notice them in your mind and celebrate them, the more your confidence in yourself grows.

Try it now and say out loud 3 things that make you amazing: your amazing skills, knowledge and/ or abilities!

Step 3: Change the words you say to yourself

The words you say to yourself are the most important and you could be limiting yourself by what you are saying.

There is one simple word you can add to the end of most sentences to help keep it positive and move you from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

This is the word ‘yet’.

This one simple word can change your sentence from negative to positive and helps you to feel more at ease and relaxed because it means it will one day happen.

Try it for yourself:

Say to yourself out loud and fill in the gap – I can’t achieve ….!
What do you feel? Despair, sadness, low?
Now change it to – I can’t achieve ….. yet!
What has changed inside your mind? Do you feel slightly calmer, hopeful or inspired?

This simple world helps your mind see that it will happen and that it is okay that it isn’t happening right now.

Try these steps out to help you achieve that growth mindset where you can achieve anything while feeling self-assured.
