The Mind and Illness
Far from the cure being the miracle, it’s often noteworthy that in cases of illness the mind has been instrumental in creating and sustaining an illness. Does this mean “It’s all in your head!” is an acceptable statement from your Dr? Strictly speaking no. Because when that statement is made it’s made with the mocking suggestion that the patient is somehow aware that they are ‘making their illness up’ in a conscious way. Invariably not the case. This is crucial to point out. Nevertheless, there’s some truth in the statement that it may well be ‘all in the mind’. Why? Because the sub-conscious mind very often is responsible for the presence of the sickness in some way. Remember the allergy? This was the ingenious way the little girl gained attention.
There are usually three reasons why the mind might come up with a set of symptoms. One is to protect the individual. Often, just being ill might mean that the person can avoid something else or avoid being labelled in a certain way. Another reason is that the illness might gain significance for the client – as seen in the allergy example. And a third reason the mind might create symptoms is to punish. Some clients’ have internalised a belief, based on some event in the past, that they need to ‘pay’ for something bad they did. Illness serves as the means to create that punishment.
Long Covid
In Long Covid we are often uncovering something from past programming that’s leading the patient to hang on to the symptoms. To emphasise, this is not intentional. This is beyond conscious awareness. It is not in the patient’s conscious mind. It is nevertheless in the patient’s sub-conscious mind. This is why RTT® can be so effective at dealing with Long Covid at a time when we know that a significant part of the population, at least 10% of those who contracted the virus, still suffer months later.
In my work as a hypnotherapist I have helped people suffering from Long Covid completely recover from their symptoms. There is always a fascinating array of reasons as to why people remain struggling with an illness. Often, it’s the minds way of trying to get someone to pay attention to something significant.
Pain on a deeper emotional level manifests in the body and is the mind’s way of alerting the person that they are not taking care of themselves in the way they should. Emotions all too often manifest in illness, and in many cases with Long Covid this lies behind the ongoing symptoms. Again, to re-iterate, none of this is ever conscious. However, by dealing with the blocks and issues that might surface in hypnotherapy the Long Covid symptoms themselves disappear.
It is fascinating, incredibly rewarding work, both for the therapist and for the patients who are relieved of debilitating Long Covid symptoms.
